Insurance Tips

insurance tips, trick, truths

Insurance companies constantly use tricks to influence you to use their preferred auto shops. It is important to know the truths and falsehoods of their claims in order to choose the auto body shop that best suits you, the customer.

If you request it, your insurance company may recommend or suggest a collision repair shop or shops. However, North Carolina law clearly states they CANNOT force you to a particular shop. Some of the ways they may try to use their influence are:

  1. Telling you that you must first get an estimate from a shop on their "preferred" list.
  2. Telling you that they can only guarantee repairs completed by a shop on their “preferred list”
  3. Telling you that going to a shop other than the ones on the “preferred” list may mean you have to pay the difference of any charges above the insurance estimates.

These claims are NOT completely true and insurance companies sometimes use these tactics to lead you to their own shops even when they are not shops of your choice. If you are interested in doing business with a shop of your preference, North Carolina law protects your freedom of choice by stating that your insurer must honor that choice without intimidation, innuendo or threat to you or your coverage.

You can ensure control of your repair shop choices by taking the time to read and understand your auto insurance policy. Your policy is a contract, a binding agreement between you and your insurance company. Make sure you understand all of the contract's terms before you file a claim. You need to know what your insurer is responsible for and obligated to, as well as your own obligations. Chances are, your insurance company will not teach you how to collect money from them, so this knowledge has to be sought out.

The choices you make regarding the repair of your vehicle should not be taken lightly. It is extremely important for you to choose a repair shop that you believe in and trust to do the work. The result can affect your car's warranty, resale value and most important, the safety of you and your family. So please, take your time and make your decisions carefully.
